Australia captain Michael Clarke is expected to be ready for the Ashes later this year, he always stays away from competitive cricket throughout April and May.

Clarke missed the test of the fourth and final, which India won by six wickets to win series four-nil, due to the recurrence of a chronic back injury. It is also nursing a hamstring problem, and will not play in the league this year's Indian Premier.

"Michael had scans which confirmed his current back injury is an exacerbation of previous problems you have had with your spine," said chief medical officer Justin Paoloni.

"As always, we have to handle this carefully, as there are potentially serious consequences further aggravation. Still have pain with core activities and not fully operational again until now.

"It also has an injured hamstring that has been a concern for most of the summer and will complicate their return. Michael is having intensive rehabilitation for both the back and hamstrings, but is still seven to 10 weeks of training and playing again.

"We are confident that it will not affect their preparation Ashes but we'll know more in the coming weeks."

The first Ashes Test starts in Nottingham on 10 July and will be followed by meetings in London, Manchester and Durham.
